Arsenal are closing in on the signing of Viktor Gyökeres from Sporting CP, according to reports from The Athletic. A deal has been agreed in principle for £54.8 million, with an additional £8.6 million in performance-based add-ons for the Swedish striker.
The Gunners have already secured personal terms with Gyökeres on a five-year contract, marking a major step forward in finalizing the transfer.
Interestingly, Gyökeres’ agent Hasan Cetinkaya has reportedly waived his £6 million fee to ensure the move goes through smoothly — a rare and selfless gesture in today’s market.
What cause the dalay
Although the transfer seemed done and dusted by late June, talks hit a snag when Gyökeres believed he had a handshake agreement with Sporting CP to leave for €60 million plus €10 million in bonuses. However, Sporting’s president did not recognize this verbal deal, causing friction.
As a result, Gyökeres refused to report to preseason training, and tensions began to rise. The situation looked like it could drag on — but Arsenal’s improved offer, exceeding the originally discussed fee, helped unlock the deal.
