Luis Diaz is on the brink of completing a move to Bayern Munich after the German champions finalized an agreement with Liverpool. The deal for the 28-year-old Colombia international is reportedly worth €75 million (£65.5 million), including performance-related add-ons. This agreement follows Liverpool’s rejection of an initial £58.6 million bid from Bayern for the forward earlier this month.
Diaz’s impending departure was signaled by his exclusion from Liverpool’s squad for Saturday’s 4-2 pre-season friendly defeat against AC Milan in Hong Kong, a decision attributed to intense speculation surrounding his future. He has since been granted permission by Liverpool to travel from Asia to Europe to undergo a medical examination in the coming days, a crucial step before the transfer can be officially sealed.
Liverpool’s Squad Evolution and Bayern’s Attacking Needs
Liverpool has been proactive in the summer transfer window, already securing the services of promising forwards Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike. The club is also reportedly keen on acquiring Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak, indicating a strategic reshaping of their attacking options.
Diaz joined Anfield from Porto in January 2022 in a deal initially valued at £37 million. During his tenure with the Reds, he has scored 41 goals in 148 appearances, including 13 in the Premier League last season as Liverpool clinched the title. His 17 goals across all competitions in the 2024-25 season marked the most prolific campaign of his career.
Bayern Munich, who celebrated their 34th Bundesliga title last season and led the league with 99 goals, are reinforcing their offensive capabilities. While dominant domestically, they exited the German Cup in the last 16 and the Champions League in the quarter-finals. Diaz’s arrival is particularly timely for the Bavarian side, as they will be without key forward Jamal Musiala for a “long period” after he sustained a broken leg and dislocated ankle at the Club World Cup.
The Appeal of Luis Diaz to Bayern
It is evident why Diaz represents an attractive acquisition for Bayern. His shot conversion rate of 18.3% in the 2024-25 Premier League season was a personal best. Beyond his goal-scoring, many of his statistical attributes underscore his quality. Diaz ranked just outside the top 10 in the Premier League for combined goals and assists (18), shots on target (30), chances created (56), and dribbles completed (52). His defensive contributions and high work-rate are also notable, as he recovered possession in the final third on 22 occasions, more than any other Liverpool player relative to his time on the pitch.
