Manchester City have officially signed 18-year-old midfielder Sverre Nypan from Rosenborg in a deal worth £12.5 million on a five-year contract.
Nypan, who has already represented Norway at youth levels up to under-21, is expected to be sent out on a season-long loan for the 2025–26 campaign. However, if no loan move is finalised before pre-season begins on 28 July, he will train with Pep Guardiola’s first team.
“It’s a dream for any young footballer to become part of this club and to join such a group of world-class talent,” said Nypan.
“I am still very young with a lot to learn, but the chance to be coached by Pep Guardiola, the best manager in the world, will only help me become a better player.”
City’s move for Nypan is seen as a strategic investment in future talent.
“Sverre Nypan has been regarded as one of the best talents in Norway and has been performing at a very high level despite his young age,” said Norwegian journalist Andreas Korssund.
“He’s viewed as the next big thing from the Norwegian league. While many expected him to take the traditional route through a smaller club, it’s a bold and exciting move to join Manchester City so early.”
The move contrasts with the career paths of other top Norwegian prospects like Erling Haaland, who progressed through Red Bull Salzburg and Dortmund, and Antonio Nusa, who developed at Club Brugge before moving to RB Leipzig.
