Newcastle United have opened discussions with Southampton to sign England international goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale. The Magpies are exploring options for either a loan or a permanent transfer, though Southampton reportedly prefers a substantial permanent sale, having acquired Ramsdale from Arsenal for an initial £18 million in August 2024.
This renewed pursuit of a goalkeeper follows Newcastle’s recent disappointment in securing James Trafford from Burnley. Newcastle had agreed a £27 million fee for Trafford, only for Manchester City to activate a matching rights clause, enabling them to re-sign their former academy product.
Manager Eddie Howe appears keen to enhance competition for current first-choice goalkeeper Nick Pope, and a move for Ramsdale would see him reunite with his former Bournemouth manager. For Ramsdale, who was last called up by England in March, the transfer offers an opportunity to remain in the Premier League, despite Southampton’s relegation last season where he made 30 appearances.
As Newcastle prepares for Champions League football this season, they are actively shaping their squad. The club also faces uncertainty regarding the future of striker Alexander Isak, who has attracted interest from Liverpool. RB Leipzig’s Benjamin Sesko is reportedly being lined up as a potential replacement should Isak depart.
